Frank O. Gehry bestowed with Prince of Asturias Award

Frank O. Gehryhas won countless awards in the course of his long career, including the1989 Pritzker Prizeand theGolden Lionfor lifetime achievement at the 11th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2008; he may now add the2014 Prince of Asturias Awardto the list.
On May 7th it was announced that the American architect had won in the Arts section of the prestigious Spanish award. The winners in the other categories will be announced in May and June, and the awards ceremony will be held in the autumn of 2014.
This is not the first time that thePrince of Asturias Award, considered the Spanish equivalent to the Nobel Prize, has been awarded to an architect: beforeFrank O. Gehryawards had been presented toRafael Moneo (2012), Norman Foster (2009), Santiago Calatrava (1999), Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza (1993) and Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1989).
In awarding the prize toFrank O. Gehry,the jury emphasised that the American architect’s buildings are characterised by virtuous interaction of complex forms and use of innovative materials. Buildings such as theBilbao Guggenheim Museumhave a strong economic, social and urban impact on their surroundings.
